The HTML element is used for subscripts. Since it is inherently presentational, it should not be used to express a given meaning. However, it can be useful for chemical formulas and mathematical indices, where the subscript presentation is helpful but not required. This element must not be used for styling purposes like the styling of the product name LaTeX. In that case CSS styles should be used; the vertical-align property with the sub value will achieve the same effect.
